The Story Behind the Book

Frances was born and raised in South Carolina, visiting the Grand strand often throughout her life.  Her earliest memories were at her Great Grandmother’s oceanfront house in “OD,” back when the dunes looked like mountains of white sand, and the strand looked a mile wide regardless of the tide.  For the past 25 years, she and her husband, Les, and multiple Golden Retrievers, have resided in Murrells Inlet, SC and Durango, CO.

It was in her neighborhood that she met Kay, and they became fast friends.  One day, Frances mentioned her desire to write a children’s book, and Kay became her inspiration and sounding board.  From there, Plantation Playground became a reality.

Keels, a Pawleys Island local and fabulous artist, has painted at least one portrait of every Golden Retriever Frances and Les have ever had.  And…. that’s how this all came about!
